Astringent vs Toner: What’s the difference?

Ever wonder why they say to use Witch Hazel as a toner? Or what’s the difference between an Astringent and a Toner? How does one vary from the other? Is there really a difference? Depending on your skin type, Yes! There is a difference.

Familiar to many, an Astringent, known as Witch Hazel, has been used in skincare regimens for many years as an ancient beauty hack. This is because Astringents heal wounds and can reduce inflammation in the skin. The real meaning of an Astringent is – the contraction of skin tissue. When skin tissue is contracting it is stimulating blood flow.

Increased blood flow helps produce collagen; The reformation of collagen helps strengthen elasticity in the skin. But most of all, Astringents are used to constrict the pores and prevent bacterial growth that can lead to infection and/or breakouts. However, there are some downfalls to using Astringents like Witch Hazel.

Unlike Toners, Witch Hazel is potent in Alcohol which can be extremely drying to the skin while skin toners provide moisture and hydration. That’s why it should only be used on certain skin types and conditions.

For instance, people with Rosacea, sensitive skin, or Dry skin, can not and/or should not use Astringents. But people with Combination, Oily, Eczema, and Acne prone skin can benefit from the use of Astringents.

Some professionals will disagree with using an Astringent like Witch Hazel because they believe it can cause more harm to the skin. While, in some cases, it can cause an overproduction of oil leading to thicker layers of dead skin on the face; in other cases, it can also exfoliate dead skin cells; Again, only when used on certain skin types!!!

But if your still not satisfied with it, try settling for Toners. Most are Alcohol Free, can be used on all skin types, are also anti-inflammatory, and promote hydration & oxygen into the skin. It’s a better alternative but also more costly than Astringents.

Here are a couple of Toners I’ve used & Love:

Elemis – Apricot Toner

Care Zone Toner (A K-Beauty Product)

*PS. I use Witch Hazel in my daily routine both Morning & Night. I haven’t had any problems with it & I definitely think it has helped heal my hormonal acne. (I have Combination Skin).

Prevent debris from entering your pores. Use a Toner!

Putting on your best Game Face: Men’s Facial

This one is for the fellas!

For many this is the most loved season for sports like Football &/or Hockey. And sometimes that’s as far as it goes. But what if I tell you there is a skincare treatment specifically centered around Men. Well luckily there is; I call it the, “Game Changer” or “Game Face”.

And gaining a mans trust is the first step to giving him a facial.

Here’s why:

  1. Men need a little more convincing than women.
  2. They expect you to know your stuff.

As you may know, most men don’t like to spend more than a few minutes shopping which means they probably won’t want to spend more than 30 minutes when receiving a facial. However, here’s why they should routinely keep up with their appearance & skincare on a daily basis:

Due to Testosterone levels, Men have 25% thicker skin than women. Which means they are more protected from harmful environmental damage and age more gracefully than woman; usually appearing 15 years younger. However, they are also more susceptible to skin cancer because some lack knowledge and use of daily sun-protection.

Thicker skin also means a tougher texture & rougher appearance resulting in an overproduction of Sebum (oil) & a longer time of wound healing; like a pimple that doesn’t seem to go away after a couple of weeks of having it popped. This is why exfoliating is necessary; And although shaving is considered a form of exfoliation, it can also be very irritating, often causing ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and hyper-pigmentation. Trying a less abrasive form of exfoliation such as micro-beads, before shaving, can be a huge game changer and is often the best outcome. Here’s a couple of great options:

  1. Image Skincare – Clear Cell Facial Scrub (Great for Acne prone skin)

This gentle scrub gets tough on acne without irritating sensitive skin or aggravating existing breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide kills acne bacteria while gentle micro-beads slough away dead skin cells to keep pores clear. Use on both face and body for deep cleaning and blemish control.

Physician formulated for:

Oily or acne-prone skin, Acne grades III and IV, & Aging skin.

2. Limelight By Alcone – Game Face Collection

…Which contains the following ingredients:

  • Aloe Vera – Hydrates and protects skin while increasing cell turnover.
  • Perlite – A completely natural and gentle exfoliator derived from volcanic glass. When water within the glass is vaporized, the material expands to form a spherical bubble structure that combines the natural hardness of volcanic rock with the softness of spherical particles.
  • Eucalyptus – Refreshes and invigorates skin while deeply cleansing pores.
  • Bulgarian Lavender essential oil – Soothes and calms skin while providing antibacterial protection to prevent breakouts and infection.
  • Hexapeptide 11 – Firms and tones skin with notable improvement in elasticity and collagen depth.
  • Agave Extract – Reduces discomfort from sunburn, razor burn, or any heat related rash. Restores moisture loss and increases water retention while combating sun damage and aging.

And most importantly.. Please Please Please DO NOT FORGET TO USE DAILY SUN PROTECTION!! Preferably SPF 50!

Image Skincare – Sport sunscreen spray. (For all skin types) *rub into skin & use all year round!

P.S. Stay away from Soap! It strips the natural oils from your skin which does more harm than help.

Falling in love w/ a Pumpkin Facial

It’s here! Pumpkin facials this time of the year!

Your fall season isn’t complete if you haven’t tried a Pumpkin Facial! And you won’t regret the results! Here’s why:

Pumpkins are not only for eating & carving. They are also very beneficial to the health of your skin. Pumpkins contain Vitamin A, powerful antioxidant that helps prevent your skin from premature aging by protecting your skin from harmful Ultra Violate Rays. It is often used as a peel because of its Enzymes. Enzyme peels are used to gently exfoliate dead skin cells helping your skin with “cellular turnover”. This means it helps restore your skin to its natural youthful glow. But that’s all these pumpkins can do! The antioxidants in it also help prevent reoccurring acne! This mask/peel is great for, but not limited to, Combination/Oily skin types. In fact it’s gentle enough for all skin types and can even prevent inflammation in the skin caused by free radicals.

Autumn is the season that teaches us that change can be beautiful.

Current Favorites In Skin Care. Day/Night Routine

As you may know, or may not know, I am a licensed professional in both Aesthetics & Cosmetology. I have been very passionate about the skincare industry at a very young age, mostly when I experienced puberty and had difficulty taking care of my skin & hair. But I’ll save my personal experience and struggles for another time. Today, it’s all about my routine and how well its been working for my particular skin type & conditions.

For years, I’ve been struggling with problematic skin which includes type 3 acne and sometimes type 4. But today, my skin is in its best condition, for 6 months now, since the birth of my daughter. About 3 years ago, I had consistent cystic acne that were painful to the touch. And in all my years I’ve tried every kind of acne medication and/or over the counter acne treatments which either never did much help or made the problem worse. This is where my obsession for makeup and Korean/Japanese Skincare began. I took the bold move of going into the skincare industry because there was nothing more I wanted to do than to help others who suffer from the same problems I had been struggling with for half my life. Some of the products above are only accessible to professionals. Clearly, I’ve been missing out this whole time. I always thought that only dermatologists had their hands on these products but I was way wrong. Yes, they have access to all the great skin stuff but so do Estheticians. The only difference is that I am not allowed to work within the Dermis Layer of the skin (unless it include mild-moderate peels) and I am not allowed to prescribe medication.

In the photo you will see a professional line called Image Skin Care. One of the best skincare lines I have tried thus far. And I have yet to try many others. My everyday morning routine includes the Image Stem Cell Facial Cleanser, Witch Hazel as a Toner (not pictured), Image Hyaluronic Acid, Klair’s Pure Vitamin C (from Soko Glam), B Natural Organics Elderberry Balancing Mist, Pure Jojoba Oil, & SPF 50 (VERY IMPORTANT)! My evening routine includes the same with an addition of Image Balancing Bio-Peptide Creme and Image Ageless Total Eye Lift Creme. This routine might seem like a bit much for the average person. But if you’re anything like me, you spend great deal of time investing in your skin especially when you see results! For me, it’s all about preventing premature aging, free radical damage, & healing my acne.

Be good to your skin; you’ll wear it everyday for the rest of your life.

Why a Peach?

Well, for starters, I love peaches. Not only are they yummy & beautifully colored; they are also very symbolic in Asian cultures. And in my opinion, Peaches are often overlooked in Skincare. In China, Korea, & Japan, peaches are the fruit of life and thought to bring immortality; very much like the forbidden apple in the story of Adam & Eve, taken from the Bible. Except peaches are praised & eaten for good health and longevity. It is also a symbol of womanhood. I mean.. let’s be honest, the inside of this fruit looks very similar to a woman’s vagina! Therefore, it’s used as a symbol of fertility & spring blossoms much like a “Virgin touch for the very first time.” But that’s aside the fact that this fruit also has a super power! It’s jam packed with Enzymes & Vitamin C. They are great for your skin & overall health. Peaches are known to decrease the risk of Cancer, especially Breast Cancer, killing off cancerous cells without harming the good ones. They also help improve blood sugar levels in diabetics & promotes good heart heath. What fruit is sexier than a peach?!

Fun Fact: Peaches are closely related to Roses! 🌹
